But you've done a spot-on job of identifying a potential room for improvement.

How about this: If the player just cares about getting that minimum degree of success, they have the option to roll all their dice at once and treat the target DC as being a point lower (2 points if you're using a die size larger than 8). Keeps the process, and makes it a snap decision whether or not to use it.Dagda (Brooks Harrel)https://www.blogger.com/profile/12719198062375441018noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9130042139488470994.post-31668196354542112152010-09-29T00:19:45.461-07:002010-09-29T00:19:45.461-07:00This is an awesome mechanic, Dagda. It feels to me like it could have the potential to be a basic, integral part of a skill system, or even a magic or combat system.

However, I suggest you consider, as a way reducing reroll time, allowing a player to declare an allocation of trick pool points to the trick roll, in addition to allowing rerolls.

Example, I have 4 Swordsplay feats and am trying to disarm an opponent, DC 6. Extra successes may go into how far I fling my opponents weapon, what direction, etc, but we're fighting on a cliffside, so all I care about is plain success. I declare my intention and announce that I will allocate all of my 4 points to the attempt and roll 1d10+3 (since 1 point generates the die roll).

A side-effect of this that some skills might have DC's that are higher than a maximum roll, and that the math for the probabilities and therefore balance become commensurately more tough.Gillaxianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01683433370412826927noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9130042139488470994.post-87359012115333114592009-08-10T07:15:40.746-07:002009-08-10T07:15:40.746-07:00Sounds pretty good. Feats have always been one of the cooler things of 3.5, and using them as a base for a new system seems good.

You might want to look into a book called Dogs in the Vineyard for some inspiration (i really like the system, although it's different from the one you have, and it's really slow). You might have already read it though.

"I know that in the Avatar RPG bending attacks will involve first rolling your Trick Dice and then making a normal check to attack your opponent with said effect." <- Would rolling your trick dice count as a buildup action?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
